SUMMARY:Course: The Buddha’s Teachings on Wisdom with Kim Allen and Diana Clark
DESCRIPTION:See for Yourself: The Buddha’s Teachings on Wisdom\nA 6 week course led by Kimberly Allen and Diana Clark\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nThe Buddha had much to say about Wisdom\, the natural quality of mind that sees things as they are and brings about liberation. In this 6-week class running from July 27 to August 31\, we will explore ways to see more clearly — in our daily life and on the cushion — which can lead to greater ease and harmony\, and wiser choices. \nWe will read early Buddhist texts (suttas) to support our study and practice. No prior experience is required. This course is offered as a six week series\, with progressive lessons and sequential instruction. \n\nJuly 27: Wise View (Diana & Kim)\nAugust 3: Seeing with Wisdom: Impermanence and Unreliability (Kim)\nAugust 10: Seeing with Wisdom: Not Identifying with What’s Happening (Diana)\nAugust 17: Understanding the Conditions for Happiness and Suffering  (Kim)\nAugust 24: Wisdom and Compassion (Diana)\nAugust 31: The Goal of Wisdom: Ending Suffering (Diana & Kim)\n\nCOURSE LEVELS:\nThis course is open to all practitioners. It is designed as a level 2-3 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nREGISTRATION:\nRegistration is required for this course. Registration will open two-three months prior to the start date of each course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the ticket feature may not have yet appeared\, so please check back later to register. \nThe sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $90 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited means. The basic rate of $90 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. The base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. The scholarship rate of $45 offers an even lower rate for those with very limited financial means. \nBy choosing to give at the mid to high range of the sliding scale your generosity supports those with limited income to attend our programs\, and it supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay Area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. If you need additional scholarship assistance and can volunteer to help\, please inquire with the registrar about service scholarships by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTicketing Tip: You may purchase series tickets on any day of the series. When you purchase a ticket you are registering for the entire class series. So you only need to register once. \nTAX DEDUCTIBILITY:\nThe basic registration fee is not tax deductible and non-refundable. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary tax deductible contributions. Each January the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the accumulated deductible donations from the previous year. This annual letter will acknowledge the amount given that is above the basic rate and serve as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCANCELLATION POLICY:\nAll fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday Class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit. \nTo redeem a voucher\, send an email to the registrar for the appropriate course and request to use your voucher credit as payment of the registration fees. If the voucher does not cover the base rate for the new class\, the balance will be due to complete the registration process. Credits vouchers can be transferred to only one future course. \nSUBSEQUENT PROGRAMING:\nThe Thursday night dhamma classroom will include an array of topics that will support the development of meditative skills and liberating insight. Please see our 2017 Calendar of Events for details. Courses will be led by experienced teachers and local experts in meditation\, mindfulness\, and Buddhism. Most classes will be appropriate for both new students and seasoned practitioners; any restrictions or pre-requisites will be noted in the course descriptions.

Previous training in sutta study or retreat experience are welcome but not expected. \nREGISTRATION:\nRegistration is required for this course. Registration will open two-three months (MARCH 1) prior to the start date of each course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register go to the first event in the series and follow the instructions under REGISTRATION. \nSUBSEQUENT PROGRAMING:\nThe Thursday night dhamma classroom will include an array of topics that will support the development of meditative skills and liberating insight. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday Class. SUMMARY:Course: The Art of Happiness; The Power of Loving Kindness (Metta)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This course began April 20\, but late registrations will still be accepted.  \n  \nA practical course on developing the profound benevolence that heals the heart. \nPresented by Shaila Catherine and 3 guest teachers: Sharon Allen\, Berget Jelane\, and Laura Lin. \n\nApril 20 — Metta for category of self — with Shaila Catherine\nApril 27 — Metta for category of benefactors — with Shaila Catherine\nMay 4 — Metta for category of dear friends — with Sharon Allen\nMay 11 — Metta for category of neutral ones — with Berget Jelane\nMay 18 — Metta for category of enemies — with Laura Lin\nMay 25 — Metta for category of all beings — with Shaila Catherine\n\nLOVING-KINDNESS\, also known as metta\, is a profound quality of friendliness toward all of life. In this course we will cultivate loving-kindness through the use of guided meditations\, and structured reflections. We will examine the contexts in which\, and the purposes for which\, the Buddha taught metta. And we will work directly with anything that seems to obstruct the natural flow of our good will. \nThis ancient practice of metta meditation cultivates a heartfelt wish that all beings be happy\, beginning with ourselves and gradually expanding the field of loving-kindness to embrace those we love\, and those who are difficult to love\, until this caring radiates to all beings without exception. Loving-kindness meditation heals the heart\, and helps us to meet difficulties in life with sensitivity. Metta meditation also strengthens the inner serenity that supports concentration. \nThis course is offered as a six week series\, with progressive lessons and sequential instruction. \nWHO SHOULD JOIN:\nAnyone may register for this course\, but the material is oriented toward meditators who have had previous experience with mindfulness meditation and are now interested in expanding their meditation to include loving kindness. Some previous meditation experience is expected\, but not required. \nREGISTRATION:\nRegistration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. Cost for our textbook (Loving Kindness by Sharon Salzberg) is included in the fees. Books will be handed out in the first class\, or you may pick one up in advance at an IMSB event or by arrangement with the registrar. \nTo register select an option under the Tickets heading in the right-hand column of this page. \nThe sliding scale fee range is from $375 to $105 the fees  will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s).
The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited means. The basic rate of $105 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as textbook\, rent\, and insurance for the specific class period. It does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. The scholarship rate of $60 offers an even lower rate for those with very limited financial means. SUMMARY:Exploring Energy in Practice with Sharon Allen
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Energy in Practice\nA day of meditation with Sharon Allen. \nOn the meditative path energy is a key element. Energy is one of the factors of awakening and one of the bases for spiritual powers. We experience energy in our physical body daily. This day long retreat will explore the significance of having a healthy balance of energy in our meditation practice as well as in daily life. Practices will include sitting and walking meditation\, mindful movement\, and reflection. \n\nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nThe day long programs are usually structured with alternating sitting and walking meditations\, augmented by meditation instructions\, reflections\, and teachings. Shaila Catherine leads most of the day longs\, complimented by periodic guest teachers or community events. \nTeachings are offered each event\, usually aimed at developing meditative skills. Whether or not a theme is announced in advance\, teachings will be offered to deepen understanding of the Buddhist path of practice. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to determine the correct location. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. SUMMARY:Course: Developing a Mindfulness Meditation Practice
DESCRIPTION:Developing a Mindfulness Meditation Practice — A skill-building class\nThis course is taught by Sharon Allen\, Janetti Marotta\, and Laura Lin. \n6 Thursdays\, February 23 – March 30\, 2017\nTo live with mindful awareness in our world\, we must become well grounded in a meditation practice. This course will focus on understanding\, practicing\, and developing mindful awareness\, so you can more fully integrate it into your life. If you find yourself wanting to have greater balance in your life\, more mental clarity\, calm and ease\, this course can help. \nThe class will emphasize learning how to remain mindful with both pleasant and unpleasant experiences\, and practicing the four postures taught by the Buddha: sitting\, walking\, standing\, and lying down. \nThis foundational Level 1 class is appropriate for those new to meditation as well as those wanting a refresher on developing a mindfulness meditation practice. These classes and practices draw on the Dhamma\, the ancient teachings of the Buddha. \nClass content and practice skills will include: \n\nFebruary 23 — Why Meditate: The power of mindfulness with breathing\nMarch 2 — Cultivating Presence: Mindfulness of the body\nMarch 9 — Settling the Restless Mind: Mindfulness of thoughts\nMarch 16 — Making Room for Emotions: Mindfulness of mental states\nMarch 23 — Practicing Kindness: Metta Practice\nMarch 30 — Remember to Remember: Mindfulness recap and practice tips\n\nPlus an optional drop-in session that continues the development of mindfulness practice on April 6: \n\nApril 6 — Enlivening Daily Activities: Eating and Walking with Mindfulness\n\nClass format will include: \n\nMeditation instruction\, with both guided and unguided meditation practice time\nTeaching on a mindfulness theme\nWritten and experiential exercises and homework\nGroup discussion\, Q&A\n\nResources will include: \n\nGuidance from experienced mindfulness teachers\nHandouts of practice guidelines\nInternet links for sutta references and writings on mindfulness\n\nREGISTRATION:\nRegistration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register select an option under the Tickets heading in the right-hand column of this page. \nThe sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $90 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited means. The basic rate of $90 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. It does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. Courses will be led by experienced teachers and local experts in meditation\, mindfulness and Buddhism. Most classes will be appropriate for both new students and seasoned practitioners; any restrictions or pre-requisites will be noted in the course descriptions. \nWhile this change in programming from a drop-in style sitting group to a Dhamma classroom is an experiment for IMSB\, it is our hope that it will enable in-depth systematic sequential teachings\, while also supporting a cohort of insight meditation practitioners in the San Jose – Saratoga area\, and providing the necessary income to cover the expenses and compensate our teachers.

SUMMARY:Course: Mindfulness in the Buddhist Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness in the Buddhist Tradition: A short course on the four modes of mindfulness called Satipatthana\nA practical and direct path.\nPresented by Shaila Catherine and Richard Shankman \nA series of new classes on meditation and Buddhism will be offered by Insight Meditation South Bay starting January 19\, 2017. \nThe classroom structure offers many advantages for continuity and depth in both the style of instruction and potential for learning. The educational and experiential format of this dhamma classroom will … \n\nSupport the establishment of consistent mindfulness meditation practice\nEnable the development of in-depth sequentially structured teachings\nBuild relationships with experienced teachers and dedicated participants through exploring how the teachings of the Buddha and practice of mindfulness impacts our lives\nEnable the inclusion of resources\, exercises\, and creative materials to enhance study and practice\nCreate practice and study groups focused on the development of skills and deepen of understanding.\n\nThe first series of classes that IMSB will be offering is on the theme of Mindfulness in the Buddhist Tradition: A Short Course on The Four Modes of Mindfulness Called the Four Satipatthanas. It will be led by Shaila Catherine and Richard Shankman\, and will include: \n\nJanuary 19 – Mindfulness of Body\nJanuary 26 – Mindfulness of Feeling\nFebruary 2 – Mindfulness of Mind\nFebruary 9 – Mindfulness of Phenomena\n\nMany practitioners consider the Satipatthana Sutta to be among the most important and practical teachings of the Early Discourses of the Buddha. It offers pragmatic instructions for establishing mindfulness with attention to four areas: body\, feelings\, mind\, and various dhamma objects (physical and mental processes). These four satipatthanas\, called establishments or foundations of mindfulness\, are the core of insight meditation teachings. They frame the practice of mindfulness within the liberating aim of the path\, thereby providing the means for our awakening. \nCOURSE DESIGN:\nThe curriculum includes practical meditation instructions\, teachings on the four satipatthanas\, supplementary readings or lectures\, and discussion about the role and function of mindfulness in the Buddha’s teachings. This course offers an overview of how the satipatthana structure functions within the context of Buddhist practice. \nIt is appropriate for both new and experienced practitioners—those who want to learn about mindfulness\, seasoned practitioners\, and mindfulness instructors. Guided meditations and practical instructions will support newcomers\, however\, beginners will benefit by also attending one of our Introductory Mindfulness Courses for a skill-oriented training. Emphasis in the satipatthana course will be on the context and aims of mindfulness teachings\, which will provide an excellent foundation for someone embarking on a mindfulness training\, and will deepen understanding for adept practitioners. \nREGISTRATION:\nRegistration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register select an option under the Tickets heading in the right-hand column of this page. \nThe sliding scale fee range is from $370 to $70 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited means. The basic rate of $70 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. \n/* */ \n\n\n\n[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
