SUMMARY:Retreat in Georgia | Insights into Emptiness
DESCRIPTION:Insights into Emptiness: Meditations on the Six Senses\nA 10-day meditation retreat with Shaila Catherine\nNovember 7 – 17\, 2024\nat Calvin Center\, 13550 Woolsey Road\, Hampton\, GA 30228\n(near Atlanta\, GA)\n \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:30 – 4:00 pm on Nov 7. The retreat ends around noon\, before lunch on November 17. \nPartial attendance may be possible\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. \nThis retreat will develop insight meditation practices using the structure of the six sense bases. \nWe will cultivate mindfulness of sensory experience\, and contemplate the impermanence\, unsatisfactoriness\, and not-self characteristics in contact with seeing\, hearing\, smelling\, tasting\, touching\, and mental activities. By clearly seeing the emptiness of lived phenomena\, habitual patterns fall away\, the causes of suffering cease\, and there can be a genuine awakening—a realization of nibbana. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. It is intended for meditators who are already familiar with mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one week long silent residential insight meditation retreat. \nSITE FEATURES: This retreat will be held at the Calvin Center in Georgia. It is a lovely and quiet retreat center in the country side that boasts a small lake and opportunities for canoeing when weather permits. It is conveniently situated about 45-minutes from Atlanta’s airport. You will enjoy the benefits of natural beauty\, a spacious meditation hall\, comfortable accommodations\, delicious meals\, access to walking trails\, and the chance for mindful canoeing. \nCOVID PRECAUTIONS: Please read our page on COVID Measures and Compliance Requirements. This will explain  the measures we are taking to prevent the spread of illness\, and the actions that will be required of retreat participants. \nRegister now! Space is limited. \nParticipants who are traveling from afar might need to check flight times carefully\, and if necessary arrange to stay in a hotel the night before the retreat. Early-arrival accommodations are not available at this retreat center\, and we must depart shortly after noon on the closing day. \nTO REGISTER: Please use the online form at the link below to submit your registration and waiver forms. \n\nRegistration Form: https://staging.imsb.org/form-calvin2024/\n\nThis form will take approximately 20 minutes to fill out. Upon completion of the form you will receive an email with details for completing your payment. You have the option of paying the non-refundable deposit of $250 or the full retreat payment either by mailing a check to the registrar or by making a Zelle bank transfer. The address and account information for making this payment will be included in the registration confirmation email. \n\nDetails of our cancellation policy are on the registration form. \n\nThe retreat facility is somewhat handicapped accessible. Accommodations include comfortable hotel-style rooms with ensuite baths\, and dorm-style cabins and lodges. See the application form for accommodation details. \nCOST: 10 nights (includes accommodation and meals)\, plus a donation to the teachers at the end of retreat. \n\nFull retreat for single occupancy: 10 nights is $3\,000 – $2\,200 sliding scale (estimated actual cost for single is $2500)\nDouble occupancy sliding scale: $2500 – $1900 (estimated actual cost for double occupancy is $2200)\n\nFee covers only accommodations\, food\, and basic administrative expenses. There will be an opportunity at the end of the retreat to make a donation to the teacher. \nThe estimated actual per-person cost if we had used a fixed rate is $2500 for a single room\, and  $2200 for a shared room. By selecting an amount above the estimated actual cost\, your generosity supports those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. Selecting an amount below the estimated actual cost is equivalent to receiving a partial scholarship. \nThe sliding scale will allow most scholarship needs to be self-managed. If you need additional scholarship support to attend\, consider applying for a scholarship through https://opendharmafoundation.org\, or contact our registrar for assistance through IMSB/Bodhi-Retreats. \nPARTIAL ATTENDANCE may be arranged for a stay of at least 3 nights\, but must begin on the first day of retreat\, and priority is given to full retreat participants. We strongly encourage attendance at the full retreat. Applicants for partial attendance will be placed on a wait list which will be reviewed approximately 2 months prior to the retreat. We cannot guarantee single rooms for partial attendees. You may contact the registrar to determine if single rooms for partial attendance are available approximately two months prior to the retreat. \nThe rates for partial attendance below are listed as single occupancy. The mid-point on each sliding scale is our estimated actual cost. Take 18% off any point on the sliding scale for double accommodations. \n\n3 nights is $1100 – $900 sliding scale\n4 nights is $1\,300 – $1100 sliding scale\n5 nights is $1\,600 – $1300 sliding scale\n6 nights is $1\,900 – $1500 sliding scale\n7-9 nights is same as full retreat: single $3000 – $2200 sliding scale\n\nDANA: Compensation for the teacher is not included in the registration price. There will be an opportunity to offer donations to the teacher at the end of the retreat. \nQUESTIONS?: meditation1bodhicourses \nCo-Sponsored by Bodhi Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay

SUMMARY:Retreat in Georgia: Concentration\, Jhana\, and the Breath
DESCRIPTION:Concentration\, Jhana\, and the Breath\nA 10-day meditation retreat with Shaila Catherine\nMonday\, October 23 – Thursday November 2\, 2023\nat Calvin Center\, 13550 Woolsey Road\, Hampton\, GA 30228\n(near Atlanta\, GA) \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:30 – 4:00 pm on Monday\, October 23. The retreat ends with lunch on Thursday\,  November 2. \nPartial attendance may be possible\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. \nThis retreat will follow the approach to deepening concentration and attaining the absorption states of jhāna as described in Shaila Catherine’s first book\, Focused and Fearless. Instructions will use the breath as the primary meditation object and will encourage the development of meditative skills that lead to deep concentration (samādhi) and clear insight (vipassanā). Daily group instructions will guide participants to efficiently overcome hindrances\, cultivate the jhāna factors\, develop skill in the meditation object\, apply balanced effort\, and learn how to enter\, emerge\, and master the jhāna attainments. Meetings with the teacher in small groups and one-on-one dialogs will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. Participants who have previously attained the four jhānas on retreat with Shaila may further develop their samādhi with jhāna practices based on the body\, the kasinas\, and formless perceptions. \nThis retreat offers a special opportunity to train in concentration and jhāna practices with personal guidance from Shaila Catherine. It is one of the very few retreats each year in which Shaila systematically guides students to establish the four jhānas. See our Concentration and Jhana FAQ page for more information about developing concentration and the absorption states of jhāna. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. It is intended for meditators who are already familiar with mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one week long silent residential insight meditation retreat. \nPrior to the retreat\, please read the first half of Focused and Fearless by Shaila Catherine. \nSITE FEATURES: This retreat will be held at the Calvin Center in Georgia. SUMMARY:Beyond Distraction: 10-night Retreat in Georgia
DESCRIPTION:Participants in this retreat must be vaccinated to prevent COVID-19. We have held retreats at this center in 2020 and 2021. We consider this site to be well designed for seclusion\, and the staff diligent in their efforts to lower the risk of infection. Please review the preventative measures taken by the center\, and read our guidelines: Guidelines for Retreat Practice in the Covid-19 Era \nBeyond Distraction: Five Ways to Focus the Mind\nled by Shaila Catherine\nMonday\, August 29\, 2022 – Thursday\, September 8\, 2022 \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:30 – 4:00 pm on Monday\, August 29. The retreat ends after lunch at 1:00 pm on Thursday\, September 8. \nPartial attendance is possible in some cases\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. A limited number of commuter spaces may be available. \nMental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that most practitioners struggle to overcome. We can refine our skills for working with the modes of thinking that distract us from being mindful: critical thoughts\, planning\, worrying\, lustful thoughts\, judging\, memories\, internal commentaries\, to name a few. The teachings on this retreat will present a sequence of strategies for dealing with obstructive mental patterns; these progressive instructions are found in two discourses in the Middle Length Discourses (suttas 19 and 20). Practitioners will be encouraged to develop a mindfulness-based meditation practice\, while exploring these strategies. The practice can free the mind from habitual distractions\, nurture calm\, concentration\, and jhana\, and incline toward a liberating understanding of emptiness.\n\nThis retreat is suitable for practitioners of any level\, providing you have attended at least one prior silent residential retreat.\n\nPreparation: Please read the following two discourses prior to the retreat. You may wish to bring a print out to the retreat for your personal reference.\n\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn19/en/bodhi\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn20/en/bodhi\n\nDaily group instructions will explore a multitude of ways to work with thoughts. Group and one-to-one guidance will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students.\nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. It will provide an ideal occasion for nurturing serenity and calmness\, removing distracting thoughts\, and inclining the mind toward a liberating realization of emptiness. This retreat is intended for meditators who already have an established mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one multi-day silent residential retreat. Students will be expected to practice a mindfulness-based approach to meditation practice.\n\nRegister early! Space is limited.  \nABOUT THE SITE: Situated in a quiet rural area just outside of Atlanta\, the Ingnatius House\, a Jesuit retreat center offers convenience and comfort to support deep meditative experience. \nTO REGISTER: Please use the online form at the link below to submit your registration and waiver forms. \nLink to registration form: IH 2022 Registration Form \nThis form will take approximately 20 minutes to fill out. SUMMARY:Concentration\, Metta and Jhana Factors: 10-night Retreat in Georgia
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. New requirement added May 14\, 2021: Vaccination against COVID-19 is required to attend this retreat. \nThis will be a very special retreat—a rare opportunity to practice with seclusion and intimacy. We will  limit attendance\, wear masks indoors\, practice social distancing\, have daily temperature checks and self-scheduled practice periods\, and thoroughly disinfect the property with daily disinfectant fogging. We believe the site of Ignatius House offers a responsible place for a small group retreat. There are private rooms with ensuite private baths\, outdoor seating along the river\, and a diligent staff. Even with our precautions\, any gathering will involve some degree of risk\, so we leave it to your good judgement to determine if this opportunity is appropriate for you.\nPlease review the preventative measures taken by the center\, our new guidelines for reducing the spread of the coronavirus\, and comments from students who attended a previous retreat in Georgia in September 2020.\n\nIH2021_Information-and-Guidelines-About-Covid-Precautions\nCOVID_Participant Quotes\n\n  \nCultivating Concentration\, Mettā\, and the Jhana Factors\na 10-day retreat led by Shaila Catherine\nMonday\, June 28\, 2021 – Thursday\, July 8\, 2021. \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:30 – 4:30 pm on Monday\, June 28. The five factors are applied attention\, sustained attention\, joy\, happiness\, and one-pointedness of mind. Although these are called the Five Jhana Factors\, they are not exclusive to jhana states. The teachings on this retreat will provide practical instructions for developing and balancing these factors; distinguishing between the jhana factors and the states of jhana absorption; and examining the powerful role that concentration plays on the path of awakening. \nDaily group instructions will emphasize loving-kindness (metta)\, however\, students are welcome to practice mindfulness with breathing or satipatthana practices if they prefer. Group and one-to-one guidance will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. It will provide an ideal occasion for nurturing serenity and calmness\, and introducing the basics of jhana practice. SUMMARY:Liberating the Mind and Heart - A Retreat Developing Compassion and Joy - near Pescadero\, CA - with Shaila Catherine
DESCRIPTION:Liberating Mind and Heart: A weeklong retreat on Cultivating Loving-Kindness\, Compassion\, Joy\, and Equanimity\nwith Shaila Catherine \nMonday\, September 17\, 2018 – Sunday September 23\, 2018.\nPartial attendance can be arranged for the first 3 or 4 nights. \nDON’T WAIT! Registration closes August 31. \nLOVING KINDNESS is a profound quality of friendliness toward all of life. Compassion is a deep commitment to non-harming. Joy highlights the blessings. Equanimity sees the truth with a balanced mind. This ancient practice called Brahma Vihara practice cultivates a heartful wish that all beings be well. It uproots tendencies toward ill will\, harming\, competitive discontent\, and craving. It is a practice of happiness that heals the heart\, meets the pains of life with sensitivity\, and strengthens the inner serenity that is essential for concentration. The Brahma Viharas can lead to the absorption states of jhana\, and to what the ancient Buddhist texts describe as a vast\, exhaulted\, and “immeasurable liberation of the mind.” \nThis retreat will include instruction\, guided meditations\, and teachings on cultivating these qualities of friendliness\, compassion\, joy\, and equanimity. There will be alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, question and answer sessions\, self-scheduled practice periods\, and teacher consultations. \nThis retreat will be held at Redwood Glen\, a lovely retreat center nestled in a redwood forest between La Honda and Pescadero. It’s about a 15-minutes drive from Pescadero State Beach\, and about a 1-hour drive from either the San Francisco Airport or the San Jose airport. \nThe retreat begins with registration at 2:00 pm on September 17; it ends at 11:30 am on September 23. Participants who are traveling from afar might need to check flight times carefully\, and if necessary arrange to stay in a hotel the night before the retreat. Early-arrival accommodations are not available at the retreat center. \nRegister early! Space is limited.\nTO REGISTER: Download and complete the RG-Metta-2018 registration and waiver forms\, enclose a non-refundable deposit of $250 (payable to Bodhi-Retreats)\, and return via email and/or postal mail to: \nKatrina Bergbauer\n225 Second Avenue\nDecatur\, GA 30030 \nretreats \n\nStandard Print Reg Form-RG-Metta-2018-final\nWaiver of Liability-RG-Metta-2018\n\nThe retreat facility is somewhat handicapped accessible. Accommodations include comfortable hotel-style rooms with attached baths\, and a few dorm-style cabins. See the application form for accommodation details. \nCOST: 6 nights including accommodation and meals \n\nDouble occupancy sliding scale: $1400 – $800\nSingle occupancy sliding scale: $2000 – $1500\n\nSelecting an amount above the middle of each sliding scale range will support the retreat and enable those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. Selecting an amount below the middle of the sliding scale offers participants the possibility of self-selecting a supported scholarship rate. \nInquire with the registrar if you need additional scholarship support to attend. \nPARTIAL ATTENDANCE: Partial retreat attendance can be arranged for a stay of  3 or 4 nights\, but must begin on the first day of the retreat\, September 17. We are confident that this site will offer tranquil and conducive conditions for our program. Updated registration information for our retreat at Saratoga Springs is below. If you are interested in attending this retreat\, please follow the registration instructions below or email the registrar with any questions: retreats . \nAn Intensive Concentration and Insight Retreat\nwith Shaila Catherine and Ann Dillon\nApril 3-13\, 2018 \nTuesday\, April 3\, 2018 – Friday\, April 13\, 2018. \nThe retreat begins with registration at 2:00 pm on April 3; it ends at 11:00 am on April 13. Early arrivals can be arranged for Monday April 2 anytime after 2pm. \nPartial attendance can be arranged\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat\, and priority will be given to those attending the full retreat. \nThe teachings on this retreat will be structured to support the development of concentration\, mindfulness\, and insight. The daily group instruction sessions will introduce mindfulness with breathing as a concentration practice\, and will systematically develop the skills that lead to the deep absorption states of jhana. This retreat is an ideal opportunity to train in concentration and jhana practices with personal guidance from Shaila Catherine. It is the one retreat each year that Shaila emphasizes concentration and jhana\, and systematically guides students through this powerful training method. Students who wish to embark on this training in concentration and jhana should read her book\, Focused and Fearless\, prior to the retreat. Click on our Concentration and Jhana FAQ page for more information about developing concentration and the absorption states of jhana. \nJhana instructions will be offered\, but this retreat is not limited to the training in concentration and jhana; students who want to practice mindfulness or metta without an emphasis on concentration are most welcome. Teachings will explore a range of subjects to support the growth of wisdom and cultivate conditions conducive for insight. \nThe approach to teaching is flexible enough to nurture a broad development of practices that are appropriate to the individual meditator. Guided by group and individual meetings with the teachers\, students may work with a variety of meditative approaches to progress in a manner and pace appropriate to their individual needs. Students who are not inclined toward concentration or jhana may choose to emphasize mindfulness\, insight\, and loving kindness practices. As the retreat progresses\, some students may practice mindfulness of the body to enhance calm and presence; some students may intensify concentration to unify consciousness through the deep absorptions called jhana; some students may cultivate loving kindness and open the heart to the precious fragility of life; and other students may nurture insight into the functioning of perception and the nature of mind. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, question and answer sessions\, and teacher consultations. \nRegister early! Space is limited.\nWe keep this retreat small (approximately 36 participants and 2 teachers) to enable in-depth one-to-one guidance. It is a powerful and intimate environment for deep meditation practice—very suitable for dedicated practitioners and an ideal introduction to jhana practices. \nTO REGISTER: Download and complete the SS2018 registration and waiver forms\, enclose a non-refundable deposit of $250 (payable to Bodhi-Retreats)\, and return via email and/or postal mail to the address below. Information will be posted soon to this website for advanced registration.  \nwith Shaila Catherine and Ann Dillon\nJune 15 – 25\, 2017 \n  \nThursday\, June 15\, 2017 – Sunday\, June 25\, 2017. \nThe retreat begins with registration at 1:00 pm on June 15; it ends at 11:30 am on June 25. Early arrivals can be arranged for Wednesday evening June 14. \nPartial attendance can be arranged\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat. Click on our Concentration and Jhana FAQ page for more information about studying jhana and concentration with Shaila. \nWith single rooms for everyone\, the facilities can support a range of practice approaches. The approach to teaching is flexible enough to nurture a broad development of practices that are appropriate to the individual meditator. Space is limited.\nWe keep this retreat small (approximately 35 participants and 2 teachers) to enable in-depth one-to-one guidance. It is a powerful and intimate environment for deep meditation practice—very suitable for dedicated practitioners and an ideal introduction to jhana practices. \nTO REGISTER: Download and complete the AC2017 registration and waiver forms\, enclose a non-refundable deposit of $250 (payable to Bodhi-Retreats)\, and return via email and/or postal mail to: \nKatrina Bergbauer\n225 Second Avenue\nDecatur\, GA 30030 \nretreats \n\nForm-Fillable PDF Registration Form – AC2017\nStandard Printable Registration Form – AC2017\nWaiver of Liability – AC2017\n\nThe 10-day retreat is designed for experienced students.
