SUMMARY:Effortless Mindfulness – author Lisa Dale Miller
DESCRIPTION:Effortless Mindfulness: Genuine Mental Health Through Awakened Presence\nby Lisa Dale Miller\nPublished by Routledge April 2014 \nThe event will include meditation and the author’s talk. \n \n7:30-9:00 Evening Program includes meditation and a talk. \n9:00-9:30 Reception with tea and treats. \nEffortless Mindfulness promotes genuine mental health through the direct experience of awakened presence—an effortlessly embodied\, fearless understanding of and interaction with the way things truly are. The book offers a uniquely modern Buddhist psychological understanding of mental health disorders through a scholarly\, yet clinically useful presentation of Theravada\, Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist teachings and practices. Written specifically for Western psychotherapeutic professionals\, the book brings together traditional Buddhist theory and contemporary psycho-neuro-bio-social research to describe the conditioned and unconditioned mind. This in-depth exploration of Buddhist psychology includes complete instructions for psychotherapists in authentic yet clinically appropriate Buddhist mindfulness/heartfulness practices and Buddhist psychological inquiry skills. The book also features interviews with an esteemed collection of Buddhist teachers\, scholars\, meditation researchers and Buddhist-inspired clinicians. \nIn his foreword to the book Ron Siegel\, PhD wrote\, “In the pages that follow\, Lisa Dale Miller takes us on an integrative adventure\, exploring the intersection of ancient Buddhist teachings with modern neurobiology and clinical research and practice. While the work of many pioneers have facilitated the integration of mindfulness practices into health care and society by intentionally extracting them from their Buddhist roots\, this book offers a different service: it looks unflinchingly at Buddhist understandings of the origins of human suffering and how various meditative techniques were designed to alleviate this suffering by fostering a radical psychological liberation.” \nAnam Thubten Rinpoche wrote in his foreword\, “You will find that the scholarship and many years of meditation practice of the author are reflected on every page.  It is intellectually satisfying and also serves as a rich contemplative guide for mindfulness meditation and Buddhism in general. No matter what your background might be\, as scholar\, meditator or seeker\, you will find many valuable insights in this work. It is such a joy to see Lisa’s gift in presenting many essential Buddhist thoughts in contemporary language and making them come alive.” \nEffortless Mindfulness is available through Amazon\, B&N\, iTunes\, etc.\, in digital and paperback editions.\nPlease visit www.awakenedpresence.com for more information about the book.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Online: Kim Allen—Real Wealth
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online: Kim Allen—Real Wealth\nwith Kim Allen \nOctober 20\, 2020 \nWhat kinds of wealth are most sustainable in times of loss? The Buddha defined five kinds of wealth that are especially appropriate for lay practitioners to develop: Confidence\, ethical conduct\, learning\, generosity\, and wisdom. The inclusion of “learning” is interesting and not often emphasized. We will explore these five qualities in the context of our current times\, considering how they can serve both ourselves and others. \nPlease join us on Zoom. This event is appropriate for newcomers as well as experienced practitioners. The evening includes silent or guided meditation and teachings. \n  \nTakes place on Zoom! \nJoin the Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88266320362?pwd=QWZpb2svQk9xZCtvWTZraXF5WTFKZz09 \nMeeting ID: 882 6632 0362\nPassword: metta4all \nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,88266320362# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,88266320362# US (Tacoma) \nDial by your location\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 929 205 6099 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\nMeeting ID: 882 6632 0362\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kcSiCSJ1bl \n  \n\n  \nTEACHERS: Please visit our Teachers Page for biographies and photos of our speakers. \nTUESDAYS ONLINE: Due to coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format with teachings offered by Shaila Catherine and an array of guest teachers. This online group meets 6:30 – 8:00 PM Pacific Time\, which makes it possible for local members to join us after their workday\, and for East Coast friends to sit with us before bed. \nEveryone is welcome. Please share this event with your friends. \nDANA/DONATIONS: IMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses that continue whether we are meeting in-person or online. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. We encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \nPlease support our programs and teachers with your donations. We especially encourage recurring monthly donations to help us through these difficult months of the pandemic. Donations can be made through our Donation Page. Recurring donations can be made through Network for Good or PayPal. \nFUTURE IN-PERSON GATHERINGS: When it is wise to do so\, Insight Meditation South Bay anticipates continuing our program of two weekly meditation programs. On Tuesdays\, we meet in Mountain View for our drop-in weekly program of meditation and teachings. Our Tuesday evening program usually includes a sitting meditation and Dhamma talk. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. On Thursdays\, we meet in Saratoga for our Dhamma Classroom\, for a series of structured courses with registration\, and periodic drop-in practice events.
