SUMMARY:Effortless Mindfulness – author Lisa Dale Miller
DESCRIPTION:Effortless Mindfulness: Genuine Mental Health Through Awakened Presence\nby Lisa Dale Miller\nPublished by Routledge April 2014 \nThe event will include meditation and the author’s talk. \n \n7:30-9:00 Evening Program includes meditation and a talk. \n9:00-9:30 Reception with tea and treats. \nEffortless Mindfulness promotes genuine mental health through the direct experience of awakened presence—an effortlessly embodied\, fearless understanding of and interaction with the way things truly are. The book offers a uniquely modern Buddhist psychological understanding of mental health disorders through a scholarly\, yet clinically useful presentation of Theravada\, Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist teachings and practices. Written specifically for Western psychotherapeutic professionals\, the book brings together traditional Buddhist theory and contemporary psycho-neuro-bio-social research to describe the conditioned and unconditioned mind. This in-depth exploration of Buddhist psychology includes complete instructions for psychotherapists in authentic yet clinically appropriate Buddhist mindfulness/heartfulness practices and Buddhist psychological inquiry skills. The book also features interviews with an esteemed collection of Buddhist teachers\, scholars\, meditation researchers and Buddhist-inspired clinicians. \nIn his foreword to the book Ron Siegel\, PhD wrote\, “In the pages that follow\, Lisa Dale Miller takes us on an integrative adventure\, exploring the intersection of ancient Buddhist teachings with modern neurobiology and clinical research and practice. While the work of many pioneers have facilitated the integration of mindfulness practices into health care and society by intentionally extracting them from their Buddhist roots\, this book offers a different service: it looks unflinchingly at Buddhist understandings of the origins of human suffering and how various meditative techniques were designed to alleviate this suffering by fostering a radical psychological liberation.” \nAnam Thubten Rinpoche wrote in his foreword\, “You will find that the scholarship and many years of meditation practice of the author are reflected on every page.  It is intellectually satisfying and also serves as a rich contemplative guide for mindfulness meditation and Buddhism in general. No matter what your background might be\, as scholar\, meditator or seeker\, you will find many valuable insights in this work. It is such a joy to see Lisa’s gift in presenting many essential Buddhist thoughts in contemporary language and making them come alive.” \nEffortless Mindfulness is available through Amazon\, B&N\, iTunes\, etc.\, in digital and paperback editions.\nPlease visit www.awakenedpresence.com for more information about the book.

DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format. Insight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. The Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. SUMMARY:Breathe with Joy
DESCRIPTION:Breathe with Joy\nA 6-week series on mindfulness with breathing led by Shaila Catherine \nTuesdays\, March 19 – June 4\, 2019 \n7:30 pm to 9:00 pm \nThe Buddha described mindfulness with breathing as a practice of joy. His instructions to his disciples on this practice were preserved in the Anapanasati Sutta—a discourse that presents sixteen practical instructions  that together map a comprehensive\,  liberating\, and joyful approach to mindfulness. \nAlthough this systematic structure is clearly described in the ancient texts\, divergent interpretations have developed regarding how to put the instructions into practice. In this series\, Shaila Catherine will offer her own interpretations of the 16-step sequence and provide snapshots of perspectives promoted by other widely respected dharma teachers. This in-depth reflection on the Anapanasati Sutta will show how meditation on breathing can deepen both concentration and insight\, and lead to awakening. \n\nMarch 19 – Ever Mindful\nMarch 26 – Breath and Body\nApril 23 – Breath and Feeling\nApril 30 – Breath and Mind\nMay 28 – Breath and Insight\nJune 4 – Breath\, Mindfulness\, and the Factors of Awakening\n\nNote: Series dates are not consecutive. They are interspersed with guest speaker events. Visit our Event Calendar for details. \nEveryone is welcome—newcomers as well as experienced practitioners. Each evening includes silent or guided meditation\, a break\, and teachings. \n\nPlease visit our Teachers Page for biographies and photos of our speakers. \nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation programs. On Tuesdays\, we meet in Mountain View for our drop-in weekly program of meditation and teachings.  On Thursdays\, we meet in Saratoga for our Dhamma Classroom\, which offer a series of structured courses with registration\, and periodic drop-in practice events. \nOur Tuesday evening program usually includes a sitting meditation and Dhamma talk.

SUMMARY:Week-long retreat in Calgary\, Canada
DESCRIPTION:Strategies for Overcoming Distracting Thoughts\nA week-long mindfulness meditation retreat in Calgary\, Canada\nwith Shaila Catherine\nMonday\, June 17 – Sunday\, June 23\, 2019 \nThe retreat begins with registration at 3:00 pm on Monday\, June 17\, and ends at 11:00 on Sunday\, June 23. \nMental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that all practitioners struggle to overcome. We can refine our skills for working with the modes of thinking that distract us from being mindful and concentrated: critical thoughts\, planning\, worrying\, lustful thoughts\, judging\, memories\, internal commentaries\, to name a few. The teachings on this retreat will present a sequence of strategies for dealing with obstructive mental patterns; these progressive instructions are found in two discourses in the Middle Length Discourses\, (suttas 19 and 20). Practitioners will be encouraged to develop a mindfulness-based meditation practice\, while exploring these strategies for overcoming distractions. \nThis retreat is suitable for both new and experienced practitioners. It will be held at the beautiful FCJ Retreat and Conference facility — a quiet oasis of peace on the banks of the Elbow River and adjacent to a natural riverside park. The residential rooms are comfortable and have been recently updated. Calgary in Alberta is a city of 1.2 million and is serviced by an international airport (YYC). It is 65 miles from Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies which is an ideal vacation destination for the days before or after our retreat. \nPreparation: Please read the following two discourses prior to the retreat. You may wish to bring a print out to the retreat for your personal reference. \n\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn19/en/bodhi\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn20/en/bodhi\n\nFor more information and registration details\, please visit: https://insightretreats.ca

SUMMARY:Meditation and Building Community
DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s program will begin as usual with 30 minutes of meditation. The meditation will be followed by community building exercises\, small group reflections\, and other activities to develop sangha and cultivate good dhamma friends. \nFacilitated by Kristi Iverson. \nOur regular weekly meditation program will resume next week. \n\nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. \nThe Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. \nNewcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.
