SUMMARY:Meditation and Teachings in Mountain View
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format.  Insight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. The Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. Newcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. IMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \n

Scroll down to choose a ticket level. \nThis at-home online weekend retreat will focus on Mindfulness of Feeling as the second establishment of mindfulness presented in the Satipatthana Sutta. If we are unmindful\, feelings can trigger habitual patterns of sensual desire\, irritation\, or ignorance. In this retreat we will cultivate equanimity and joy through a wise response to pleasant\, unpleasant\, and neutral feelings. We will learn to recognize the difference between sensual feelings that perpetuate craving\, and spiritual feelings that support our path. \nPlease join us as we deepen our practice together through a program of live video conferences with Shaila Catherine. The online meetings will include guided meditations\, Dharma talks\, question and answer sessions\, and small group discussions. Scroll for tickets below.  \nLearning Through Examples: Images\, Illustrations\, and Similes in the Discourses of the Buddha\nAn ONLINE 6-week Introduction to Sutta Study with Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen \nThursdays\, May 21 – June 25\, 2020\n5:30 pm to 7:30 pm (Pacific Time) \nThe Buddha’s teachings are peppered with images of mountains\, rivers\, oceans\, sun and moon\, lions\, jackals\, turtles\, quail\, fire\, archery\, craftsmanship\, gates\, bubbles\, mirages\, magic tricks\, ripening fruit\, purifying gold\, incubating eggs\, blind men\, sumptuous meals\, stumps\, creeping vines\, etched lines\, childhood games\, and more. What makes these images so effective? What can we learn from them today? \nThe Buddha’s teaching skill shines through the wide range of illustrations he used to convey subtle points of instruction. Ordinary people could comprehend deep topics because his examples related to ordinary aspects of daily living. Scroll for tickets below.  \nLearning Through Examples: Images\, Illustrations\, and Similes in the Discourses of the Buddha\nAn ONLINE 6-week Introduction to Sutta Study with Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen \nThursdays\, May 21 – June 25\, 2020\n5:30 pm to 7:30 pm (Pacific Time) \nThe Buddha’s teachings are peppered with images of mountains\, rivers\, oceans\, sun and moon\, lions\, jackals\, turtles\, quail\, fire\, archery\, craftsmanship\, gates\, bubbles\, mirages\, magic tricks\, ripening fruit\, purifying gold\, incubating eggs\, blind men\, sumptuous meals\, stumps\, creeping vines\, etched lines\, childhood games\, and more. What makes these images so effective? What can we learn from them today? \nThe Buddha’s teaching skill shines through the wide range of illustrations he used to convey subtle points of instruction. Ordinary people could comprehend deep topics because his examples related to ordinary aspects of daily living. Farmers would relate to the images of sowing seeds and yoking oxen to the plough; warriors would understand his stories of training horses and driving chariots. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. DESCRIPTION:All in-person programs in May are cancelled. We home to resume our day-long program soon. When we are able to meet again\, we will arrange the seating to maintain a 6 foot distance between participants.  \n\nA day of meditation with Shaila Catherine.\nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nThe day long programs are usually structured with alternating sitting and walking meditations\, augmented by meditation instructions\, reflections\, and teachings. Shaila Catherine leads most of the day longs\, complimented by periodic guest teachers or community events. At most day long events\, Shaila is available for individual consultations. \nShaila offers teachings at each event\, usually aimed at developing meditative skills. Whether or not a theme is announced in advance\, teachings will be offered to deepen understanding of the Buddhist path of practice. \nDue to the current COVID-19 situation\, we will NOT hold the usual pot-luck community meal; please bring a bagged lunch. The meal break will take place round 12:30 pm. A microwave oven is available.  \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to determine the correct location. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.
