REGISRATION HAS CLOSED. \nConcentration\, Jhana\, and Breath:\na 9-night Meditation Retreat in North Carolina\nled by Shaila Catherine\nFriday\, October 4\, 2019 – Sunday\, October 13\, 2019 \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:00 – 3:30 pm on Friday\, October 4. The retreat ends at 11:00 am on Sunday\, October 13. To accommodate travel needs\, participants may arrange to arrive Thursday\, October 3 or stay until October 14. \nPartial attendance can be arranged\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat\, and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. \nThis retreat will utilize the breath as the primary meditation object and will encourage the development of meditative skills that lead to deep concentration (samadhi) and insight (vipassana). Daily group instructions will focus on the sixteen steps in the Anapanasati Sutta as a route to jhana and/or liberating insight. One-to-one guidance will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. Some students may choose to emphasize concentration practice throughout the retreat; others may emphasize vipassana; and some may practice both concentration and insight in-conjunction with mindfulness of breathing. \nThis retreat offers a special opportunity to train in concentration and jhana practices with personal guidance from Shaila Catherine. It is one of the very few retreats each year in which Shaila systematically guides students to establish jhana by working step-by-step with the Anapanasati Sutta. Students who wish to embark on this training in concentration and jhana should read her book Focused and Fearless prior to the retreat. See our Concentration and Jhana FAQ page for more information about developing concentration and the absorption states of jhana. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. \nPrior to the retreat\, please read Focused and Fearless by Shaila Catherine\, and the Ananpanasati Sutta. Space is limited.\nWe keep this retreat small (not more than about 40 participants) to enable in-depth guidance from Shaila. Previous retreat experience in the insight meditation tradition is required\, with a minimum of at least two week-long silent residential retreats. If you have attended less than two week-long silent retreats\, your attendance requires approval from the teacher. \nACCOMMODATIONS: Heartwood Retreat is tucked away in a quiet lake community in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina. \nThe retreat facility is handicapped accessible\, but if you have mobility limitations\, please contact our retreat registrar for details. \nPlease note that this will be a non-smoking retreat. \nHeartwood Refuge has modest\, hotel-style rooms. All rooms are designed as doubles with ensuite bathrooms. We can negotiate with the center to utilize some rooms as singles\, but that will require leaving beds unoccupied; therefore\, if you request single accommodations without a medical need\, and if you are financially able\, please choose a registration fee amount that is on the upper end of the sliding scale ($2250 – $1700). If you request a single room\, please explain why you need it\, citing your medical needs\, sleep disorders\, or preferences in the space provided on the registration form. \nCOST: 9 nights (includes accommodation and meals) is $2250 – $1150 sliding scale\, plus a donation to the teachers at the end of retreat. The estimated actual per-person cost for this retreat (if we used a fixed rate) is $1700. By selecting an amount above $1700\, your generosity supports those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. This sliding scale will allow most scholarship needs to be managed by self-selecting an amount lower than $1700. \nAdditional nights for early arrival or late departure: $100 per extra night. \nPartial retreat option registration fees are below. Priority will be given to students who are registering for the full 9-nights course. \n\n2 nights (Friday–Sunday) is $700 – $400 sliding scale\n3 nights (Friday–Monday) is $900 – $550 sliding scale\n4 nights (Friday–Tueday) is $1100 – $675 sliding scale\n5 nights (Friday–Wednesday) is $1300 – $800 sliding scale\n6 nights (Friday–Thursday) is $1500 – $950 sliding scale\n\nDANA: Compensation for the teacher is not included in the registration price. DESCRIPTION:Young Meditators Group\nBringing Practice to Modern Daily Life \nFor Ages 18 to 39\nMeets the second Tuesday of each month just prior to the usual IMSB weekly meditation and teaching program. \nWe’re building a community of young practitioners\, ages 18 to 39\, around interest in practice as a source of strength and refuge. SUMMARY:Meditation and Teachings in Mountain View
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format.  Insight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. The Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. Newcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. IMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \n

Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

DESCRIPTION:A day of meditation with Shaila Catherine.\nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nThe day long programs are usually structured with alternating sitting and walking meditations\, augmented by meditation instructions\, reflections\, and teachings. Shaila Catherine leads most of the day longs\, complimented by periodic guest teachers or community events. At most day long events\, Shaila is available for individual consultations. \nShaila offers teachings at each event\, usually aimed at developing meditative skills. Whether or not a theme is announced in advance\, teachings will be offered to deepen understanding of the Buddhist path of practice. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to determine the correct location. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.
