SUMMARY:Monthly Day of Meditation with Shaila Catherine
DESCRIPTION:A day of meditation with Shaila Catherine. \nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nThe day long programs are usually structured with alternating sitting and walking meditations\, augmented by meditation instructions\, reflections\, and teachings. Shaila Catherine leads most of the day longs\, complimented by periodic guest teachers or community events. At most day long events\, Shaila is available for individual consultations. \nShaila offers teachings at each event\, usually aimed at developing meditative skills. Whether or not a theme is announced in advance\, teachings will be offered to deepen understanding of the Buddhist path of practice. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to determine the correct location. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Beginner’s Orientation session occurs the first Tuesday of every month just prior to our weekly meditation group\n6:30 pm – 7:25 pm \nInsight Meditation South Bay\nSt. Timothy’s Episcopal Church\, Edwards Hall\n2094 Grant Rd.\, Mountain View\, CA 94040 \nThe Beginner’s Orientation introduces mindfulness meditation instructions\, and provides an orientation to Insight Meditation South Bay. This beginner’s session is conducted the first Tuesday of the month immediately before the regular weekly sitting. Come for the introduction\, and then stay for the regular weekly program\, where you will meet the members of Insight Meditation South Bay and our teachers. \nAn overview of the practices that we teach can be found on our  Vipassana Practice (Insight Meditation) page. \nMeditation instruction is offered starting at 6:30. SUMMARY:Meditation and Teachings in Mountain View
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format.  Insight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. The Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. Thursdays we meet in Saratoga for our Dhamma Classroom\, which offer a series of structured courses with registration\, and periodic drop-in practice events. \nToday’s group meets every Tuesday evening for a sitting and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation Retreat\nTheme: Strategies for Overcoming Distracting Thoughts\nMental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that all practitioners struggle to overcome. We can refine our skills for working with the modes of thinking that distract us from being mindful: critical thoughts\, planning\, worrying\, lustful thoughts\, judging\, memories\, internal commentaries\, to name a few. The teachings on this retreat will present a sequence of strategies for dealing with obstructive mental patterns; these progressive instructions are found in two discourses in the Middle Length Discourses\, (suttas 19 and 20). Practitioners will be encouraged to develop a mindfulness-based meditation practice\, while exploring these strategies for overcoming distractions. \nPrerequisite: Participants must have some previous insight meditation experience. This requirement may be satisfied either by having attended at least one insight meditation retreat of five days or longer\, or by having an established daily meditation practice of mindfulness or insight meditation for more than one year. \nAttendance Requirement: Participants are asked to arrive at the start of the retreat\, and depart at the end of the retreat. Please do not register for this retreat if you expect to arrive late or depart early. SUMMARY:Meditation and Teachings in Mountain View
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format.  Insight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. The Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. Newcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. IMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. DESCRIPTION:We invited several local teachers to share both the personal aims that guide their practice and their understanding of the goals of the Buddhist Path. We asked them the following questions: \n\nWhat is the goal of Buddhist practice?\nWhat do you personally hope to achieve through your practice?\nWhat is a reasonable way to assess our progress – how can we tell if we are on track?\nHow can we work skillfully with goals in the context of mindfulness-based practices that emphasize present moment awareness?\n\nThis series will explore both the ultimate and relative goals of Buddhist practice. DESCRIPTION:Mindful Self-Esteem: Cultivating Self-Acceptance and Self-Compassion\nLed by Janetti Marotta\, Ph.D. \nA 6-week course based on the book 50 Mindful Steps to Self-Esteem: Everyday Practices for Cultivating Self-Acceptance & Self-Compassion \nLow self-esteem is such a common issue because we’re conditioned to look for comfort and security in outside factors that are constantly changing. We struggle to lock in a permanent stamp of approval that is unachievable. This “problem of self-esteem” is both a part of the human dilemma in general and at the center of Western culture in particular.  \nMindfulness shifts your perspective from outside-in to inside-out: self-worth arises by cultivating qualities that make it possible to embrace all parts of yourself\, just as you are. This cultivation invites your inherent worth or Buddha nature to come to the surface. From an open\, undefended position\, you’re able to be truly present for yourself\, others\, and the experience of life. \nAs you learn to accept that everything changes\, you recognize that success and failure wax and wane. When you begin to experience life as an unfolding process\, you loosen the confines created by defining yourself as “this or that.” As described in 50 Mindful Steps: “From a Buddhist perspective\, self-esteem can be defined as self without definition.” \nThis course will be taught through three sets of sequentially-based teachings\, exercises\, and practices: \n\nPractices to still the mind and calm the body (mindfulness of breath and body);\nPractices to cultivate self-acceptance (mindfulness of thoughts);\nPractices to cultivate self-compassion (mindfulness of emotions).\n\nFor biographies and photos of our teachers\, visit the Teacher’s Page. \nCOURSE LEVELS:\nThis course is open to all practitioners.
