SUMMARY:Effortless Mindfulness – author Lisa Dale Miller
DESCRIPTION:Effortless Mindfulness: Genuine Mental Health Through Awakened Presence\nby Lisa Dale Miller\nPublished by Routledge April 2014 \nThe event will include meditation and the author’s talk. \n \n7:30-9:00 Evening Program includes meditation and a talk. \n9:00-9:30 Reception with tea and treats. \nEffortless Mindfulness promotes genuine mental health through the direct experience of awakened presence—an effortlessly embodied\, fearless understanding of and interaction with the way things truly are. The book offers a uniquely modern Buddhist psychological understanding of mental health disorders through a scholarly\, yet clinically useful presentation of Theravada\, Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist teachings and practices. Written specifically for Western psychotherapeutic professionals\, the book brings together traditional Buddhist theory and contemporary psycho-neuro-bio-social research to describe the conditioned and unconditioned mind. This in-depth exploration of Buddhist psychology includes complete instructions for psychotherapists in authentic yet clinically appropriate Buddhist mindfulness/heartfulness practices and Buddhist psychological inquiry skills. The book also features interviews with an esteemed collection of Buddhist teachers\, scholars\, meditation researchers and Buddhist-inspired clinicians. \nIn his foreword to the book Ron Siegel\, PhD wrote\, “In the pages that follow\, Lisa Dale Miller takes us on an integrative adventure\, exploring the intersection of ancient Buddhist teachings with modern neurobiology and clinical research and practice. While the work of many pioneers have facilitated the integration of mindfulness practices into health care and society by intentionally extracting them from their Buddhist roots\, this book offers a different service: it looks unflinchingly at Buddhist understandings of the origins of human suffering and how various meditative techniques were designed to alleviate this suffering by fostering a radical psychological liberation.” \nAnam Thubten Rinpoche wrote in his foreword\, “You will find that the scholarship and many years of meditation practice of the author are reflected on every page.  It is intellectually satisfying and also serves as a rich contemplative guide for mindfulness meditation and Buddhism in general. No matter what your background might be\, as scholar\, meditator or seeker\, you will find many valuable insights in this work. It is such a joy to see Lisa’s gift in presenting many essential Buddhist thoughts in contemporary language and making them come alive.” \nEffortless Mindfulness is available through Amazon\, B&N\, iTunes\, etc.\, in digital and paperback editions.\nPlease visit www.awakenedpresence.com for more information about the book.

SUMMARY:Online Course - Finding Balance - with Kim Allen

Register Now! Scroll for tickets below.  \nFive Doorways to Finding Balance\nThe Spiritual Faculties in Meditation and Life\nA six-week ONLINE course led by Kim Allen and Shaila Catherine\nWhen the ground shifts beneath our feet\, how do we orient? What is reliable\, both as an inner refuge and as a source from which to act? Buddhist teachings emphasize the impermanence and unreliability of the world\, and they also offer reliable means to navigate such a world skillfully\, such that our life becomes a path to Awakening. In this series\, we will explore the five spiritual faculties (trust\, energy\, mindfulness\, concentration\, and wisdom) as reference points and doorways to finding balance and clarity amidst uncertainty. Each highlights a different approach to developing the mind and to acting with wisdom and compassion in our life. \n\nJul 16: The Spiritual Faculties as Indriya: Ways to Channel the Mind\, with Kim Allen\nJul 23: Trust\, with Kim Allen\nJul 30: Energy\, with Shaila Catherine\nAug 6: No class. Mid-course Break.\nAug 13: Mindfulness\, with Kim Allen\nAug 20: Concentration\, with Kim Allen\nAug 27: Wisdom\, with Kim Allen\n\nVIDEO CONFERENCES: We will use the Zoom video conference platform. To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. COURSE FEE: The sliding scale fee range is from $600 to $125 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $125 is used for the most basic administrative costs. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE: A limited number of scholarships at the rate of $62.50 are available for those with very limited financial means. To request this scholarship rate\, please inquire with the registrar prior to selecting a ticket by contacting ThursdayClass. The registrar will send recipients of scholarships a coupon code that will lower the base rate by half during the registration process. TAX DEDUCTIONS: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. CANCELLATION POLICY: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit. \n\n \n \n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Thursday evening course into an online format. We changed the time to enable meditators in other time zones to join us. Zoom is easy to access via computer or phone. More information will be provided in the confirmation materials after registering. WHO SHOULD JOIN: This course intended for people who have already been introduced to mindfulness meditation. COURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 1-2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. REGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series.

SUMMARY:Concentration\, Jhana\, and Breath: 10-night Retreat in Georgia
DESCRIPTION:This retreat is open for registration. We currently have 17 participants registered\, and can accept up to 4 more participants. This will be a very special retreat—a rare opportunity to practice with seclusion and intimacy. Please review the preventative measures taken by the center\, and read our new guidelines: Guidelines for Retreat Practice in the Covid-19 Era \nTeachings on Sixteen Steps of Anapanasati Samadhi\nled by Shaila Catherine\nMonday\, August 31\, 2020 – Thursday\, September 10\, 2020. \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:00 – 3:30 pm on Monday\, August 31. The retreat ends after lunch at 1:00 pm on Thursday\, September 10. \nPartial attendance is possible in some cases\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. A limited number of commuter spaces may be available. \nThis retreat will utilize the breath as the primary meditation object and will encourage the development of meditative skills that lead to deep concentration (samadhi) and insight (vipassana). Daily group instructions will focus on the sixteen steps in the Anapanasati Sutta as a route to jhana and/or liberating insight. Meetings with the teacher in small groups and one-on-one dialogs will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. Some students may choose to emphasize concentration practice throughout the retreat; others may emphasize vipassana; and some may practice both concentration and insight inconjunction with mindfulness of breathing. \nThis retreat offers a special opportunity to train in concentration and jhana practices with personal guidance from Shaila Catherine. It is one of the very few retreats each year in which Shaila systematically guides students to establish jhana by working step by step with the Anapanasati Sutta. Students who wish to embark on this training in concentration and jhana should read her book Focused and Fearless prior to the retreat. See our Concentration and Jhana FAQ page for more information about developing concentration and the absorption states of jhana. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. \nPrior to the retreat\, please read Focused and Fearless by Shaila Catherine\, and the Anapanasati Sutta. You may download the sutta at: https://suttacentral.net/mn118/en/bodhi \nRegister early! Space is limited. We keep this retreat small (previously under 40 participants) to enable in-depth guidance from Shaila. Update 5/29/20: As a precaution to limit the spread of the coronavirus\, the retreat will be significantly smaller than the 40 that we originally planned. Currently attendance is restricted to 22 guests\, although this number might change slightly by Aug 31. See the Guidelines for Retreat Practice in the Covid-19 Era document for more information.  \nABOUT THE SITE: Situated in a quiet rural area just outside of Atlanta\, the Ingnatius House\, a Jesuit retreat center offers convenience and comfort to support deep meditative experience. \nTO REGISTER: Download and complete the IH2020 registration and waiver forms\, enclose a non-refundable deposit of $250 (payable to Bodhi Retreats)\, and return via email and/or postal mail to the address below. We are not currently accepting credit card transactions\, so please send your registration deposit and fees via check or money order made payable to Bodhi Retreats. If this is not possible for some of our international guests\, please contact the registrar for alternative payment arrangements. \nKatrina Bergbauer\n225 Second Ave\nDecatur\, GA 30030 \nretreats \nPlease complete either the Standard-Printable or Form-Fillable form\, and also the Waiver of Liability.\nImportant: If you use the form-fillable version\, download the form to your computer first.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Online: Bridget Rolens—Receiving Unskillful Speech
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online: Receiving Unskillful Speech\nwith Bridget Rolens \nSeptember 1\, 2020 \nThe Buddha emphasized the importance of speaking wisely as part of the path to attaining liberation from suffering.  He also emphasized the importance of being able to be on the receiving end of speech that is false\, harmful\, poorly timed and harsh\, without reacting with hatred.  We’ll explore how we can apply this teaching in an age in which there is so much unwise speech. \nPlease join us on Zoom. This event is appropriate for newcomers as well as experienced practitioners. The evening includes silent or guided meditation and teachings. \n  \nTakes place on Zoom! \nJoin the Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88266320362?pwd=QWZpb2svQk9xZCtvWTZraXF5WTFKZz09 \nMeeting ID: 882 6632 0362\nPassword: metta4all \nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,88266320362# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,88266320362# US (Tacoma) \nDial by your location\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 929 205 6099 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\nMeeting ID: 882 6632 0362\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kcSiCSJ1bl \n  \n\n  \nTEACHERS: Please visit our Teachers Page for biographies and photos of our speakers. \nTUESDAYS ONLINE: Due to coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format with teachings offered by Shaila Catherine and an array of guest teachers. This online group meets 6:30 – 8:00 PM Pacific Time\, which makes it possible for local members to join us after their workday\, and for East Coast friends to sit with us before bed. \nEveryone is welcome. Please share this event with your friends. \nDANA/DONATIONS: IMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses that continue whether we are meeting in-person or online. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. We encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \nPlease support our programs and teachers with your donations. We especially encourage recurring monthly donations to help us through these difficult months of the pandemic. Donations can be made through our Donation Page. Recurring donations can be made through Network for Good or PayPal. \nFUTURE IN-PERSON GATHERINGS: When it is wise to do so\, Insight Meditation South Bay anticipates continuing our program of two weekly meditation programs. On Tuesdays\, we meet in Mountain View for our drop-in weekly program of meditation and teachings. Our Tuesday evening program usually includes a sitting meditation and Dhamma talk. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. On Thursdays\, we meet in Saratoga for our Dhamma Classroom\, for a series of structured courses with registration\, and periodic drop-in practice events.
