SUMMARY:Beyond Distraction
DESCRIPTION:This event was cancelled due to low registrations (October 6\, 2023).\nBeyond Distraction\nCultivating the Skills to Focus Attention\nAn 8-week series with Shaila Catherine and Kim Allen\nRegistration is required. Scroll below for tickets.\nThis course will follow Shaila Catherine’s latest book\, Beyond Distraction\, as we explore a traditional sequence of strategies for dealing with obstructive mental patterns. We can all develop skills that overcome restlessness\, develop calmness\, and free the mind from obsessive planning\, worrying\, fantasizing\, judging\, and dwelling in personal narratives. Participants will be encouraged to develop a mindfulness-based meditation practice\, while exploring specific strategies for overcoming distractions\, understanding the workings of mind\, and fostering calm attention. \nReadings: Please purchase the book Beyond Distraction: Five Practical Ways to Focus the Mind by Shaila Catherine (published in 2022).\nWe will also read the following two discourses: \n\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn19/en/bodhi\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn20/en/bodhi\n\nOctober 9 – Lost in Thought\, with Shaila Catherine\nOctober 23 – Many Kinds of Thoughts\, with Kim Allen\nNovember 13 – Antidotes and Alternatives\, with Shaila Catherine\nNovember 27 – Weighing the Costs\, with Kim Allen\nDecember 11 – Withdrawing the Fuel\, with Shaila Catherine\nJanuary 8 – Unraveling the Causes\, with Shaila Catherine\nJanuary 22 – Applying Resolve\, with Shaila Catherine\nFebruary 12 – Moving Toward Liberation\, with Shaila Catherine \n\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to all practitioners. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 1-2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \n\n\n\n\n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $200 to $600 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $200 is estimated to cover only the basic expense of rent for the class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nDana/Donations: Donation baskets will be available at each event for drop-in guests and those who wish to offer additional donations to support the teachers and IMSB. Dana gifts are tax-deductible. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $100 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need financial assistance\, you may use the discount coupon code “halftherate” to reduce the lowest ticket by 50%. Or contact intention for additional assistance. \nPartial or Drop-in Attendance: If you do not want to register for the whole course\, but would like to attend one or two sessions on a drop-in basis\, you may join us and offer payment at the door. The recommended sliding scale is $25–$100 per session\, with a discount scholarship rate of $15 per session. \nIf you can attend at least 4 out of the 8 scheduled sessions\, please use the usual tickets or scholarship code to register online. \nTax Deductions: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are tax deductible. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge donations of $250 and above in the previous year. This letter will serve as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If you must cancel your participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future event. Vouchers must be used within two years of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

DESCRIPTION:Balancing Effort and Ease in Meditation and in Life\nA 6-week course led by Shaila Catherine and _______________ \nDeveloping the energies that transform and awaken the mind! \nThursdays\, November 5 – December 17\, 2020\n7:15 pm to 9:00 pm\nSilence begins at 7:00. Arrive early (around 7:00) to enjoy the optional pre-class meditation period. \nRight effort – balancing energy and ease – supports the development of mindfulness\, concentration\, and insight. By learning to use our energies effectively\, we overcome obstacles\, transform mental habits\, open to a fresh and free way of engaging with experience\, and cultivate beautiful qualities that incline the mind toward profound peace. \nThis course will explore effort with an emphasis on the four modes of “right striving” described in the Sammappadhāna Samyutta\, The Connected Discourses on Right Striving (SN 49.1). This brief teaching presents a flexible four-part approach to refining and balancing energy that is relevant to formal meditation practice\, and can help us to skillfully meet the demands of daily life. \n\nNovember 5: Introducing Mindfulness and Effort: A Balanced Approach\nNovember 12: Effort to Protect\nNovember 19: Effort to Free\nNovember 26: No class tonight. Enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday!\nDecember 3: Effort to Cultivate\nDecember 11: Effort to Maintain\nDecember 17: Reflections on Skillful Effort\, Confidence\, and Relaxation\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to all practitioners. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 1 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $120 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $120 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $50 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance\, or if you would like to volunteer to help out\, please inquire with the registrar by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTax Deductions: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series - Buddha's Core Teachings
DESCRIPTION:Buddha’s Core Teaching\nA 5-week speaker series exploring the Four Noble Truths.\nJanuary 7 – February 4\, 2020 \nFinding true happiness. \nNo one wants to suffer\, and yet stress is everywhere in our lives.  After the Buddha awakened under the Bodhi Tree\, the first thing he talked about was how to find true happiness. \nHe described four wise ways you can work with your mind in the midst of ordinary and meditative experiences\, popularly known as the Four Noble Truths. You can (1) comprehend your suffering; (2) abandon its causes; (3) realize that it is possible to end suffering; and (4) follow the path that leads to its end. Practicing this path\, you will become free—not by avoiding what is unwanted\, but by developing a wise relationship to your mind and all the myriad conditions by which it manufactures stress. \n\nJanuary 7 – Understanding How Things Are\, with Lisa Dale Miller\nJanuary 14 – Letting Go of Distress\, with Janetti Marotta\nJanuary 21 – Realizing Freedom\, with Tony Bernhard\nJanuary 28 – Practicing the Path\, with Carla Brennan\nFebruary 4 – Awakening with the Four Truths\, with Shaila Catherine\n\nThis series is appropriate for newcomers as well as experienced practitioners. Each evening includes silent or guided meditation\, a break\, and teachings. \n\nPlease visit our Teachers Page for biographies and photos of our speakers. \nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation programs. On Tuesdays\, we meet in Mountain View for our drop-in weekly program of meditation and teachings.  On Thursdays\, we meet in Saratoga for our Dhamma Classroom\, which offer a series of structured courses with registration\, and periodic drop-in practice events. \nOur Tuesday evening program usually includes a sitting meditation and Dhamma talk. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. \nNewcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB. We encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.

Click this link for a key to course level designations.\nThis foundational Level 1 class is appropriate for those new to meditation as well as those wanting a refresher in establishing a mindfulness meditation practice. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $90 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $90 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $45 is offered for those with very limited financial means.
