SUMMARY:Emptiness in Buddhist Practice—Online
DESCRIPTION:Emptiness in Buddhist Practice—Online\nAn 8-week course led by Shaila Catherine \nMondays Online via Zoom\nDecember 7\, 14\, 21\, January 4\, 11\, February 1\, 8\, 15\n4:30 – 6:00 PM Pacific Time \nTeachings on emptiness point directly to the liberating potential of the Buddhist path. Although this topic may sometimes seem obscure in the context of modern lay life\, it is worthy of deep reflection and study. The Buddha urged his disciples to apply their minds to understand the teachings on emptiness. The experience of emptiness is so central to his message in fact\, that on one occasion he warned that the dhamma will disappear from this world if people do not lend an ear to the teachings that “are deep\, deep in meaning\, supramundane\, dealing with emptiness.” \nThis course is structured as a discussion of the book authored by Guy Armstrong titled “Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators.” Shaila Catherine will lead guided meditations and discussions to facilitate a profound contemplation of emptiness. Together we will explore a variety of meditation practices that illuminate the insubstantial void nature of experience and incline the mind toward a direct realization of emptiness. \n\nDecember 7 — The World is Empty of Self — Chapters 1 & 2\nDecember 14 — What is Real? — Chapters 3 & 4\nDecember 21 — How We Create A Sense of Self — Chapter 5\nJanuary 4 — Beyond Self — Chapters 6\, 7 & 8\nJanuary 11 — Karma: Who Acts? — Chapters 9 & 10\nFebruary 1 — The End of Karma\, Abiding in Emptiness\, Cessation\, Nibbana — Chapters 11\, 12 & 13\nFebruary 8 — All Phenomena are Empty — Chapters 14\, 15 & 16\nFebruary 15 — The Empty Nature of Awareness. Compassion — Chapters 17 – 21\n\nREQUIRED BOOK: Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators\, by Guy Armstrong\, published by Wisdom Publications. Paperback: ISBN 9781614295266. E-book: ISBN 9781614293798 \nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to all practitioners\, however\, it is designed for those who have already had an introduction to mindfulness meditation practices. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nPRECAUTIONS FOR IN-PERSON MEETINGS: The in-person meetings will be limited to a maximum of 20 participants. We will meet in a large sanctuary that under normal circumstances would seat 250. Your temperature will be taken before entering\, face masks that cover the nose and mouth are required\, and social distancing will be practiced. SUMMARY:Effortless Mindfulness – author Lisa Dale Miller
DESCRIPTION:Effortless Mindfulness: Genuine Mental Health Through Awakened Presence\nby Lisa Dale Miller\nPublished by Routledge April 2014 \nThe event will include meditation and the author’s talk. \n \n7:30-9:00 Evening Program includes meditation and a talk. \n9:00-9:30 Reception with tea and treats. \nEffortless Mindfulness promotes genuine mental health through the direct experience of awakened presence—an effortlessly embodied\, fearless understanding of and interaction with the way things truly are. The book offers a uniquely modern Buddhist psychological understanding of mental health disorders through a scholarly\, yet clinically useful presentation of Theravada\, Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist teachings and practices. Written specifically for Western psychotherapeutic professionals\, the book brings together traditional Buddhist theory and contemporary psycho-neuro-bio-social research to describe the conditioned and unconditioned mind. This in-depth exploration of Buddhist psychology includes complete instructions for psychotherapists in authentic yet clinically appropriate Buddhist mindfulness/heartfulness practices and Buddhist psychological inquiry skills. The book also features interviews with an esteemed collection of Buddhist teachers\, scholars\, meditation researchers and Buddhist-inspired clinicians. \nIn his foreword to the book Ron Siegel\, PhD wrote\, “In the pages that follow\, Lisa Dale Miller takes us on an integrative adventure\, exploring the intersection of ancient Buddhist teachings with modern neurobiology and clinical research and practice. While the work of many pioneers have facilitated the integration of mindfulness practices into health care and society by intentionally extracting them from their Buddhist roots\, this book offers a different service: it looks unflinchingly at Buddhist understandings of the origins of human suffering and how various meditative techniques were designed to alleviate this suffering by fostering a radical psychological liberation.” \nAnam Thubten Rinpoche wrote in his foreword\, “You will find that the scholarship and many years of meditation practice of the author are reflected on every page.  It is intellectually satisfying and also serves as a rich contemplative guide for mindfulness meditation and Buddhism in general. No matter what your background might be\, as scholar\, meditator or seeker\, you will find many valuable insights in this work. It is such a joy to see Lisa’s gift in presenting many essential Buddhist thoughts in contemporary language and making them come alive.” \nEffortless Mindfulness is available through Amazon\, B&N\, iTunes\, etc.\, in digital and paperback editions.\nPlease visit www.awakenedpresence.com for more information about the book.
